Soy/Dairy/Gluten Free Shortening and Margarine

I just discovered these two items:

Earth Balance Soy Free Natural Buttery Spread

This one is relatively new and so not widely available. I haven't been able to find any yet but I am in the process of requesting it at our local stores. I wish I could just order it online but they don't do direct sales.

Spectrum Organic Shortening This is made from 100% palm oil. I haven't tried it yet either but I'll write a review as soon as I do. You can only order this one online. They don't appear to sell through stores. Of course the disadvantage of that is it's $7 for 24 oz plus $6 shipping. Not cheap. But they do have a monopoly on it so I guess they can get away with it.

  1. The Spectrum palm oil shortening is available in stores, though probably not at the most of the conventional supermarkets that most people go to (though I've seen it at one or two near me in So Cal, but demand is probably higher here than in some other parts of the country).

I've bought it several times at stores that sell "natural" foods and stock many Spectrum products, though I mostly use it for greasing my gas grill and oiling baking pans and my cast iron skillets (it can take the heat unlike olive oil) . Whole Foods probably has palm oil shortening, Wild Oats probably does, too. Any store that stocks other Spectrum oil products should be able to order it for customers; whether they are willing is another story...

Haven't looked for the Earth Balance product, but margerine is something I'd never consider buying, so I don't know if I've actually seen it on the shelves. I have seen the brand, though. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
